They’re bringing out about 250 rare pieces from the Costume Institute’s archives, showcasing over 400 years of fashion history.
The exhibition “Superfine” is inspired by Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. It’s set up in 12 sections, each showing a different side of dandy style, like Ownership, Presence, Distinction, Disguise, Freedom, Champion, Respectability, Jook (which, according to Zora Neale Hurston, is a place for dancing, drinking, and having fun), Heritage, Beauty, Cool, and Cosmopolitanism.
The exhibition will feature rare garments, paintings, photos, and art from influential artists such as Torkwase Dyson, Tanda Francis, and Tyler Mitchell. This theme celebrates the unique style of Black dandies, whose fashion legacy has profoundly impacted the global fashion scene from the 18th century to today. Monica L. Miller is even helping out as a guest curator, working with Andrew Bolton from the Costume Institute.
